Sweet Dispositions

Those who read this blog:

Last night I made pancakes. And I wrote a blog post about it....because that's what I do. I write posts about things like that. But I didn't post it here. Obviously. This is because I was a guest blogger for my friend Allison's blog An Apple A Day Handmades!!!! Click on the link to read the post I wrote on her blog.

God bless,
Andrew

I Did Not Inherit My Dad's Decision-making Skills

I went to the Cannon Center today for lunch.

SIDE NOTE: Get a Meal Plan. If you go to BYU and you are always on campus doing homework (like I am), then you should definitely get a Meal Plan. $6.50 gets me an all-you-can-eat dinner at the Cannon Center. The place is about twice the size of Chuck-a-rama (bad comparison) and yet it has FIVE TIMES as much food! AND IT'S GOOD FOOD, TOO!

So I went to the cashier to have her swipe my BYU I.D. to pay for it. But then I stopped and said to myself, "Now wait a minute. Do I really want to eat here? I feel like I've eaten here every day [which is the truth]. Why don't I stop off at the BYU Creamery right next door and just eat a hamburger or something?"

It took me about five minutes to decide that, yes, I actually do want to go over to the Creamery and buy a sandwich or two. That was a hard decision.

Then. I sat at the Creamery counter for a really long time trying to read their menu and decide what I really wanted. The cashier said,

"Oh, don't worry about it!
Take your time!
You're fine!"

like she gets paid to say, and then I finally came up with what I wanted to order.

It was only after she had rung up my order and swiped my ID card as payment that I realized I was paying $8.15 for a couple of grilled chicken sandwiches that probably aren't even that healthy, when I could have a full-course all-you-can-eat buffet of exceptionally healthy food right next door at the Cannon Center for just six bucks. So I asked her to give me a refund.

I feel really, really bad about this in retrospect.

But the worst part is that she had no idea how to give me a refund (probably because nobody at the Creamery orders their food, pays for it, and then immediately asks for a refund like I did). So she spent a few minutes to try to mess with the computer to figure it out. Then it got to the point where she had to go get her co-worker from the other register across the room to come figure it out. That girl looked at it, tried to figure it out, but realized she had no idea how to do it either.

The whole time I'm sitting there apologizing like an idiot for making them give me a refund immediately after I had paid for my food.

Then they had to go get their MANAGER to come and help me get my ridiculous and unjustifiable refund. She knew what to do. Everyone was left really confused and/or annoyed, and I walked away as quickly as I could.

I walked back to the Cannon Center, and the girl at the register gave me a puzzled look when I walked up and explained that I had changed my mind, that I'm terribly indecisive, and that I actually do want to eat at the Cannon Center. She looked at me and said, "You mean you were over at the Creamery that whole time? Wow. That took you a while."

King of Kings

I woke up today with the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah in my head.

For the Lord God, Omnipotent, reigneth!

Except that I was rolling my r's like crazy, so it was more like...

For the Lord God, Omnipotent, rrrrrrrrrrreigneth!

Then.

Today in my Chem 105 class we learned that electrons are actually spinning while they orbit the nucleus of an atom. This is much like how the earth spins on its axis, except that the electron is moving at a speed something like 2.78 x 10^1 trillion km/s. Oh yeah. And it's also not just a particle that circles the nucleus, like we were all taught in middle school. It's also a wave that cancels itself out at certain distances from the nucleus that are called "nodes". And that's called Wave/Particle Duality In Matter. And then my head exploded.

Then.

I went to my 10:00a Hebrew 101 course, where I learned how to say

"I speak Hebrew in the university!"

in Hebrew, which, in case you are wondering, is אני מדבר עברית בשוניורסיטה, which is actually read right-to-left and is pronounced, "aNEE me-da-BER eev-REET bah-uni-ver-si-TAH."

Too bad I'll never get to say it to anybody except my teacher.

And now I'm off to PD Bio 120, where I will probably learn more about the structure of the cells in animals. And, yes, that's much cooler than it sounds. Well, I take that back. It's as cool as it sounds, but it sounds cooler than you think it does.

I'll let you go ahead and chew on all this for a while.

Vacations Are Over

I don't write on this site as much as I used to. Lately I've been acclimating myself to school and all that entails. Is it possible to have as much homework as what these professors are giving me??? It feels like I haven't stopped to breathe since I set foot in Utah late last Saturday. And even this little "break" which I'm giving myself to write this post is not really guilt-free, since I still have to write in my Hebrew journal for 15 minutes before I go to bed (That's right - I'm taking Hebrew 101) (Don't ask why).

School is difficult. This semester I'm trying new things. Instead of taking only GE classes and religion classes, I've decided to focus on classes for a major. I'm really unsure of what I want to do, though, and that presents me with quite a problem. I have seriously considered the idea of going to medical school, but then I sit down and say to myself, "But am I really all that interested in medicine?" Then I assure myself that, yes, I am, and that I should stop thinking and focus on finishing my Chem 105 homework. But then I say, "But am I really all that interested in science?" And then I tell myself that in high school I really enjoyed chemistry and physics, so why not major in something that I've tried out and know that I love? But then I say, "But just because I enjoyed the science in high school, does that mean that I really should major in one of the sciences?" Then I start to question everything. My brain explodes. I consider being a physicist. Then a sociologist. Then an Ancient Hebrew scholar. Then a professional rock climber. I start thinking about my brother Tim, who is majoring in Comparative Literature, and who wants to go into Law. I tell myself that Law is also very interesting, and that perhaps I should try being a lawyer. But then I remember that I've already taken way too many unnecessary courses in school, and for me to try yet another semester to figure out what I want to do with my life would be foolish since I've already wasted so much time going in so many different directions.

And so I go back to the idea of med school. And sigh.
School is indeed very difficult. I envy those who have known what they want to do since they were a little kid.

WHY GOD? WHY?

New Place

Well, I'm home. And I moved into my new apartment at The Riv. And I a very cool roommate and a nice view out my bedroom window.

Sounds like a dream, right?
It is.

More on this next step in my life later, since right now I have to finish unpacking.
